Sweet dough, warm gooey chocolate chips…what’s not to love? Try this basic chocolate chip cookie recipe for kids!
Chocolate chip cookies are a staple in every grandparent’s kitchen, and they make an appearance in millions of shopping carts around the world each year. You don’t even need children in the house to justify dunking a fresh-baked cookie into a cold glass of milk or enjoying one with a steaming cup of coffee. Fortunately, this is one of the simplest types of cookies to make.

When trying to select the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe, consider whether you prefer your cookies soft and chewy or crunchy and crisp. Many people look forward to piping hot cookies that are puffy and soft as cake while others enjoy tasting a crunchy cookie as it crackles and dissolves in their mouth.
You can also consider variations on the standard chocolate chip cookie. Some recipes may list white chocolate chips on the ingredient list while others add nuts to the mix. You may even come across a recipe for double chocolate cookies that incorporates a chocolate cookie with chocolate chips.
If you want to take your cookie even further away from the traditional recipe your grandma baked, you can switch up the flavors. What about an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie or a peanut butter cookie with chocolate chips added? You can even indulge by doubling the chocolate chips or mixing chocolate chips with peanut butter chips or caramel pieces.
Those creative ideas are fun to play around with when you have the time, but start out with this simple chocolate chip cookie recipe. This recipe won’t take a lot of time to make, and it creates a soft, chewy cookie that everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup softened butter or margarine

  • 1 cup granulated white sugar

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 350 g (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  • Heat the oven to 175 C° (350 degrees F) while proceeding to mix the cookie dough.
  • Combine the first three ingredients into a creamy mixture using a spoon or electric beaters. Beat each egg into the mixture, one at a time.
  • Add the vanilla, and mix thoroughly.
  • Stir in the flour, baking soda and salt. Mix thoroughly.
  • Finally, fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Once the cookie dough is mixed, scoop the dough into small balls and place on a cookie sheet. You can use a large spoon or ice cream scooper to dip out balls of a consistent size. Do not grease the cookie sheet, and make sure the cookies are evenly spaced because they will expand while baking.
  • Place the cookie sheet in the oven for approximately 10 minutes. The first time you bake cookies in your oven, make sure to check them after 8 minutes and remove from the oven if they are golden brown around the edges.
  • Let cookies sit on a wire rack to cool after baking, or simply enjoy them piping hot from the oven accompanied by a tall glass of milk.
