Deserts

Everyone likes to eat something sweet at some point or another. For most of recorded history, dessert was limited to fruits and honey, or sometimes nuts rolled in honey. Dates were a popular dessert in hot desert climates; the Greeks hailed pomegranates as the “fruit of the gods.” It was not until the late Middle Ages, however, that the idea of dessert as we know it today gradually took form. Because of the cost of sugar at the time, desserts were often made with honey and almost always reserved for the wealthy; this did not really begin to change until the 19th century.

Enjoy Dessert Any Time of the Day
Today, the category of dessert is possibly the broadest of all the food groups. The Fannie Farmer Cookbook alone dedicates some 250 pages to various dessert recipes. Many desserts are based on starches, such as cakes and cookies. Others are milk-based, like ice cream and most puddings. Due to their bonding properties, eggs are frequently an important part of many desserts.
Although typically served at the end of a meal, and especially popular during the holidays, desserts are also enjoyable as a snack or a treat at any time of the day. Desserts are very diverse and can be perfectly suited to almost any meal. Though it may be easier to buy a pre-made dessert at a store, it is much more satisfying to make it from scratch, and it’s often surprisingly easy.
