hourIf you are familiar with the word “Keema” then you must know one or two things about Indian Foods. The Keema originated in India and it basically means minced meat (mostly lamb or mutton but in this version we will be using beef), which is the main ingredient of this recipe.
If you know me, I’m all about experimenting with different ingredients, styles of cooking and preparing healthy and delicious meals for my friends and family. Today, I’m very excited to share with you a dish that became quite a hit in my family – The Beef Keema Pie.
Let me tell you – this is not your regular pie, it has lots of tweaks. It’s a delightful fusion of flavors with an Indian twist. Indian foods are known for their spices and cooking style and this dish is no exception.
The kick from the spices combined with the savory minced beef creates a unique taste that is sure to surprise your family and friends.
Traditional Indian spices such as Garam Masala and Turmeric create an aromatic allure that you can’t find in any American or Western cuisine. On the other hand, the softness of the potatoes balances out the spiciness of the Beef Keema Pie which creates a pleasant harmony of flavors.
Keema was not invented yesterday – it goes back to the Mughal Dynasty and it’s one of the best dishes from that period. So it’s safe to say that this Keema thing is almost 1000 years old and has gone through some pretty cool tweaks and transformations over the years (in simple words, it has seen everything).
Keema is very popular in India – you can enjoy it as street food or in 5-star hotels. In India they don’t use beef (for religious reasons), instead, they use lamb or mutton. But we will be using beef and a few different ingredients to add some twist to it
What I love the most about this dish is that it’s very simple to prepare. The ingredients and the simple cooking process allow it to be done in under one and a half hours. Even if you are just a beginner, you still can’t mess it up – it’s that simple.
One of the best parts of this dish is that it’s completely balanced and healthy (and dairy free). This is because I have only used ingredients that are easily accessible, healthy, cost-effective, and can be enjoyed by both adults and kids alike. It’s an ideal main course for a party or family gathering.
Speaking of health facts, the dish is packed full of nutrients. I didn’t use unhealthy ingredients so it’s perfect if you are conscious about your and your family’s health. It’s packed with lean protein, healthy carbs, and fat. I have also added spinach so you can expect to get a little bit of fiber as well.
What I particularly love about the Beef Keema Pie is that it’s freezable. So for leftovers, you can easily put them in a freezer and enjoy them the next day. Just put it in a microwave for a couple of minutes and you are good to go. This makes it a practical dish and ideal for busy weekdays.
So are you ready to learn the recipe? I can’t wait for you all to try this recipe – so roll up your sleeves and let’s dive into the recipe.

Ingredients
2 grated potatoes
2 large tomatoes peeled and chopped
1 large chopped onion
150 g (5.3 oz) spinach
3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp minced ginger
4 garlic cloves
750 g (1.6 lbs) ground beef
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp crushed cumin
1 tsp Garam Masala
200 ml (6.9 fl oz) beef broth
Salt to taste
Directions
- Saute onion in olive oil until soft
- Add garlic and ginger to the onion and cook until everything is golden.
- Add minced meat, spices to the pan and cook until it turns brown, then add tomatoes and beef broth, add salt.
- Cook the mixture until it thickens, for about 20 minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Now add the spinach and cook for 1 more minute until the spinach has reduced in volume.
- Mix the grated potatoes with half the olive oil, salt and microwave for 2 minutes.
- Take a baking dish. Put the mince combination in it
- Lay grated potatoes on top
- Put the Keema pie in the oven for 30-40 minutes at 180 degrees C° (356 F). The dish is ready when the potatoes become lightly browned on top. But avoid drying the dish out too much.
